Abstract

The opening of Sagoromo Monogatari constructs a beautiful world of fantasy by skilfully arranging allusions. This paper attempts to analyze the narrative techniques specifically characterized by the rhetorical expertise of the opening part. It can be argued that the opening condenses the narrative techniques unique to this work in demonstrating, through the frequent and closely-related allusions, such typical features as the following: the virtual merging of the narrator's viewpoint with that of the male protagonist, Sagoromo; the alternating exclusion of Sagoromo's internal feelings from the factual ("external") narrative; the use of free indirect discourse; the blurring of facts through allegorization of the landscape; the defamiliarization and decentering of the reader's perception through allusions; and the digression and equivocation of problems.
