Abstract

The ability to memorize and quote from the classic, that is, ancient poetry, was a basic requirement the court of the Empress Teishi, where the definition of theclassic and its effective adoption was constantly pursued. It is known that Seishonagon played an active role in this circle; at the same time, her importance as an originator of free and variagated discourses should not be overlooked. She sometimes travelled to remote regions, in pursuit of the words uttereed by the inhabitants, observing strange vehicles hurrying on the road, and imagining various fates of those people madly running after a vehicle. Describing these, Seishonagon established the discourses and the narrative style that transcended the prescribed logic of her literary circle.
