Abstract

As regards to reading Gubijinso, one is often exposed to the a priori framework of interpretation consisting of the assumptions that the novel rewards the good and punishes the bad, and that it has "philosophy" as subject. In this essay, I have attempted to point out the problematic character of this interpretative framework, and examined the images of Kono and Munechika from the viewpoint of the "author" as narrator, by dissociating Soseki the writer from his writing. As a result, I argued that Kono is a "philosopher" who hides in his "study," and that it is Munechika who embodies the novel's world.
