Abstract
In Godansho, there is an argument claiming that the gods of Ise and Knmano are one and the same, their fundamental source being Kuzekannon. Identification of the gods at Ise and Kumano were discussed from various perspectives in Chokankanmon, arriving at the conclution that denied their identical character. Nevertheless, this theory was widely believed even in Kyoto, during early years of the reign of retired emperors (insei). This argument about identical gods was actually inspired by Omine Engi, a book customarily considered to be unorthodox. In the background for a widespread acceptance of this argument was ex-emperor Shirakawa's passionate faith in gods and Buddha. In publicization of this theory of the origin, Oe no Masafusa himself was deeply involved.
