Abstract

There were published many stories generally called "self-help fiction" in the late Meiji Period. Self-help fiction is a sort of Bildungsroman in which a character starts at the bottom and finally makes a success of life. Here I will examine its mode of representation and its effect on the reader, reading mainly Shinsen Horiuchi's works.
