Description

Kaden, the theoretical writing of Noh art by Zeami, was completed through the very complicated process of production. Around the tenth year of the Oei Period, while working on Kaden, Zeami wrote an article about the "arcana" of the art which he had a plan to include in the book. But the article, now lost, eventually remained unpublished. Here with extant material I will reconstruct what is written in the article and consider what the author aimed at. Zeami seems to have been much inspired by the contemporary poetics called "jittai" to start writing it. Indeed, in response to the liberal poetical theory, he attacked the conservatism of the Noh circle which adhered to the old tradition. Thus in the missing article, he must have insisted that Noh should be more flexible and open to other kinds of artistic activities.
