Abstract
The Mugen-no, a form of the Noh play, is performed in the dream framework. Usually a story goes in a dream of a monk, and it is fantastically presented so that the audience may be aware that all things happen in his dream. Here I will examine the function of dreams in the Mugen-no in relation to Buddhism. In the Buddhist Scripture and fables, dreaming of Buddha prefigures that one will enter Nirvana. And in illustrated scrolls, which visually convey religious ideas, there are not a few pictures depicting a dreamer and his dream. The point is to make clear how those written or drawn dreams are structurally related to that performed on the stage.
