Abstract
The aim of this article is to describe the development of the Buddhist outlook in medieval times which can be traced in religious texts. The scriptures in Shinpuku-ji Temple, for example, show the way the substance of Buddhism had gradually changed. The Book of Buddha of the Shingon Sect as well as Bunkan's esoteric discourses and icons clearly indicates the institutionalization of primitive Buddhism that occurred in medieval times. The text about the founder of Shin-Buddhism and the book of Prince Shotoku's doctrine are also important for a textual study of Buddhist history. With those religious texts I will try to draw a whole picture of medieval Buddhism.
