Abstract

Shiki Masaoka turned into a "haiku" poet and started his poetical reform after his failure as a prose writer. His aim was to investigate into and find the meaning of "haiku". After a lot of trials and errors, he concluded that "haiku" was a poetical style peculiar to Japan just because it was symbolically tied with the small nature of small Japan. But again Shiki eventually failed in this attempt to define haiku. In this essay, I will psychophysically consider what this one poet's failure meant in the midst of the Sino-Japanese War.
