Abstract

Beginning around the 1930s, Japanese modernism showed a peculiar development by mixing modernity with tradition. This unexpected combination can be found in almost anything modern; the rationalistic style of modern architecture, the works of modern photography, and the Neue Sachlichkeit of modern art. Junichiro Tanizaki, Yojuro Yasuda, Ango Sakaguchi, Syoichi Nakai, and other modernistic writers were also influenced in style and content by the trend. The mixture of the two opposites suggests the ambivalence of ethnocentrism and heterogeneity in the modernist movement of the 1930s.
