Abstract
The aim of this article is to make a historical reading of Tecchou Suehiro's Nankai-no-haran by putting it in the context of the Japanese invasion of the Philippines in the mid-Meiji Period. When the literary text is read in relation to the political discourses and activities of the age, it is found that both worked together to justify and promote the invasion. Like other "southern expansion" stories, Nankai-no-haran functioned as an ideological apparatus for mystifying the expansion policy into the manifest destiny of the nation-state.
