Abstract

"Yoru-no-kutsu" is Riichi Yokomitsu's short story based on the author's own experience of living in a remote village of Yamagata Prefecture during the war. As is shown in its dairy form and in his belief that he was a descendant of Matsuo-Basho, the story seems to have been written under the influence of Oku-no-hosomichi. With the symbolic power both of haiku poetry and of novels, Yokomitsu confronted the chaotic and desolate conditions of postwar Japan and in so doing tried to recover his own lost identity.
