Abstract
This article will examine the nature of the songs by the members of the Akashi Family in the "Wakana" Part 1 of Genji-monogatari. In their songs there often appear such dismal phrases as the "dilapidated cottage or "darkness in my heart" In unison with each other, they effectively reflect the fate of the ruined family. Among them the songs by Akashi-no-Kimi are most important; although the poet confesses she will retire into religion after childbirth, there she positively interprets the tragic history of her family as a moment on which to build a new life.
