Abstract
Now few young people seem to be enough sensitive to others. So in reading Atsushi Nakajima's short story Sangetsu-ki in kokugo class, it is important to make students fully appreciate Ensan's friendship with Richo, who has metamorphosed himself into a tiger. Like the youth of today Richo is a person with an introspective and self-centered turn of mind. But Ensan makes his beast friend open his heart with his unchanged attitude toward him. The metamorphosis of a human being into a tiger doesn't refer to Richo's egotism alone. As is shown in the use of the verb "return" and the inflection of the pronoun "I," it also symbolizes the terror and absurdity of death.
