Abstract

Now in literary education we must know and overcome the limits of the narratological method that is centered on first-person narration. Beyond the very limits there is something that transcends individual narrators or the essence of narrative function. In this article I will analyze the process of remembering and narrating what happened in wartime in "Machibuse," the translation by Haruki Murakami of Tim O'Brien's short story, precisely in order to elucidate the system of narrative formation. I will also consider what the reading of narration is in terms of contextualization, re-contextualization, or de-contextualization by the act of reading.
