Abstract

Literary sketches, one of the genres established in the modern literary movement of the Meiji Period, have been usually studied in the light of aesthetic value, but here I will focus on the journalistic role they played in covering events. For example Shin-shujin, a collection of literary sketches by Sokotsu Samukawa, refers to the topics of the day so frequently as if it were a series of journalistic reports. The literary sketches by Ryoichi Nishi, who was acquainted with Samukawa's master Shiki Masaoka and Hekigoto Kawahigashi, are also so journalistic that they must have been read like newspaper articles.
