Description

The aim of this article is to consider the role of literature in the improvement of literacy with the two classical narratives Konjyaku-monogatari-shu and Uji-shui-monogatari. In the former story the interrelation between "reading" and "writing" is thematically featured while in the latter the act of "writing" presents itself as a moment that induces "reading" and "interpreting." Especially in Uji-sheti-monogatari the omnipotence of literacy is emphasized because one can radically re-interpret and even re-construct the world with the power of language.
