Abstract

In this article I will trace the change of style in the landscapes represented in the picture scrolls by the Tosa School artists of the Muromachi Period. In the early fifteenth century Tosa-Yukihiro mixed the conventional images of scenes into a landscape without sketching any actual place. But in the late fifteenth century, unlike his predecessor, Tosa-Mitsunobu sketched places before working on his scrolls. In the mid-sixteenth century Tosa-Mitsumochi adopted a more modern method; he placed himself in the middle of landscape so that he could represent it in a more effective perspective.
