Some biological properties of S-carbethoxythiamine (CET), S-carbobutoxythiamine (CBT) and O, S-dicarbethoxythiamine (DCET) were studied. CBT and DCET showed a thiamine activity approximately equivalent to that of thiamine-HCl in the rat growth tests, while CET showed somewhat less activity in the low dose level (5μg). However, it exerts thiamine activity almost equivalent to that of the others in a high dose (10μg). These S-carbalkoxythiamines (CATs) were highly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract when administered orally to the rabbit, rat and human, and readily converted to thiamine or cocarboxylase in the body. When they were given parenterally to animals, the high blood thiamine levels continued for a long time. CATs penetrated the blood cell membrane more readily than thiamine-HCl, and they were converted to thiamine in the blood cell.
