Abstract

In order to elucidate differences in growth-promoting effect of pantothenic acid (PaA) analogues between different types of bifid bacteria, growthstimulating activities of PaA, pantethine (PaSS), pantetheine-4'-phophate (P-PaSH) and CoA on total 66 strains of bifid bacteria (14 strains of type I-II, 20 of type III, 6 of type IV and 26 of type V), which were all isolated from stool of infants were assayed. In addition, peptide requirement of these strains were also determined. PaSS and P-PaSH were active for all the strains of bifid bacteria of each type. CoA was also active for all but 5 strains, whereas PaA was shown to be active for the growth of all the strains of type IV, 60% of type III, 65% of type V, and none of type I-II. Peptide was required for growth of all the strains of type I-II, 15% of type III, 23% of type V and no strain of type IV.
