Description

In order to introduce enzymatic saccharification into the production of ethanol fuels from cellulosic biomasses, a significant reduction of enzyme cost is required by dramatic improvement in cellulase activity for crystalline cellulose. Ammonia treatment of cellulose converts its crystalline structure from type I to type III(I) and results in dramatic improvement of cellulase activity for the substrate. The velocity of cellobiose production by Cel6A from Phanerochaete chrysosporium for cellulose III(I) is 38-times higher than that by Cel7A from Trichoderma reesei for ellulose I. Moreover, the combined use of the two enzymes for cellulose III(I) can attain 81-times higher velocity on cellobiose production.
