Abstract

In this paper, I trace the movements of Nicolo Machiavelli soon after his retirement to San Castiano in 1513, through his correspondence with Francesco Vettori, an old friend of his, who held a poltica1 position of considerable importance in those days. Their correspondence treats first of their political and diplomatic views, revealing their patriotic ardor, and secondly of their search for employment and their love affairs. His letters, which have been treated rather lightly, must be reexamined as a clue to the political situation of Italy in those days, as well as to a full understanding of Machiavelli. As a first step, in this paper, I have examined the letters from Machiavelli Gesammelte Schriften Book V, and from Villari, Life and Times of Niccolo Machiavelli.
