Abstract

This study is an investigation of the angle of a shamisen player's neck when the player is playing the shamisen. A statistical analysis was conducted on 343 musicians ; the result indicated that the mean value of the angles, mode, and standard deviation were 32, 33, and 3.7, respectively, and that the histogram was a bell-shaped bilateral distribution.

The results of comparing nagauta with the other genres of shamisen music using F tests were as follows : the population variances of icchûbushi, gidayûbushi, kiyomotobushi, kouta, zashikiuta, jiuta, shinnaibushi, sôsakukyoku, hauta, and miyazonobushi were the same as that of nagauta, whereas the population variances of kamigatauta, tokiwazubushi, and min'yô were different. The results of comparing nagauta and other genres of shamisen music using t tests based on the results of F tests were as follows : the population means of kamigatauta, gidayûbushi, kiyomotobushi, kouta, zashikiuta, jiuta, shinnaibushi, sôsakukyoku, tokiwazubushi, miyazonobushi, and min'yô were the same as those of nagauta, icchûbushi, and hauta were different.

The population variances were different for men and women, although their population means were equal. The angle of a shamisen player's neck is relatively free from the difference in clothing, sitting posture, and the genre of music they play.
