Abstract

This study clarifies how a teachers’ training program held by local art museums can be the first step of enriching art appreciation education in cooperation between schools and art museums. The subject of this study is “The Utilization of Museums for Teachers” program. This teachers’ training program is held by approximately 11 museums and art museums established in Kobe, Hanshin. A comparison with the “Leader Training for Art Education Using Art Museums” program at the Independent Administrative Institution National Museum of Art made the characteristics of “The Utilization of Museums for Teachers” program clear, for example, “localness” and “museum collaboration”. After specifying these characteristics of “The Utilization of Museums for Teachers” program and conducting participant observation, interviews were held with teachers and curators/staffs of art museums to under stand the present state of teachers’ training in local art museums. This study considers the significance and challenges of teachers’ training in local art museums from records of the interviews and reviewed teachers’ training in local art museums to enrich art appreciation activity on a short term and a long term term basis.
