Description

This study demonstrated students’ comprehensive understanding of fine art gained as a result of an active learning exercise. The study was conducted in the fine art classes for grade seven students during which the students were introduced to a method of actively expressing their experience of art appreciation using an active learning approach. The students were given an active experience of art appreciation based on different works or fields of fine art. For example, the works or fields were related to realism, abstract art, and contemporary art. At the end of the fine art classes, questions designed to encourage thinking were posed to help students in gaining a comprehensive understanding of fine art. Students’ written responses to the questions were collected and visualized through text mining. An analysis was conducted to determine the nature of students’ comprehensive understanding of fine art. The results of analysis indicated that students’ comprehensive understanding of fine art varies depending on the works or fields of art appreciation. This study suggests that the experience of appreciating art provides students a comprehensive understanding of fine art.
