Description
This paper is a review of the exhibition of loaned masterpieces from the Musée du Luxembourg held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Gallery in March 1928. This exhibition was authorized by the French governmental committee, and was a part of the 7th Contemporary French Art Exhibition; an annual exhibition organized by a French art dealer, Herman d’Oelsnitz. It was the first exhibition that has the distinction of having brought treasures from a national museum in France to be shown in Japan. Although it was a milestone in Franco-Japan art exchange, many details of the exhibition remain unclear. This article sheds light on the exceptional role this exhibition played in the history of the Gallery, as its main activity had been to hold the exhibitions of the domestic art associations. Through historical documents and archived materials such as blueprints, photographs and artworks, this study aims to reconstruct the exhibition to better appreciate its unique significance in museum history.
