Description

This paper is mainly concerned with cognate object (CO) constructions in English. After summarizing the properties of CO constructions and Transitivizing Object (TO) constructions shown by Massam (1990), I will search for CO constructions with unergative verbs such as live, smile, laugh, etc, in the British National Corpus and the Corpus American Contemporary English, and will show that these CO constructions have the properties of TO constructions rather than those of CO constructions, which means that the cognate objects are the arguments of the unergative verbs, but not adjuncts. Furthermore, I will indicate the syntactic evidence which leads to the same conclusion, that is, the cognate objects with unergative verbs are the arguments. In addition, I will argue about the telicity and referentiality of cognate objects with unergative verbs. Based on the syntactic and semantic properties of CO constructions found out in the discussion mentioned above, I will propose the syntactic structure of CO constructions.
