Efficacy of Visual-Auditory Shadowing

説明

The efficacy of visual-auditory shadowing for improving listening comprehension was investigated in this study. Nakayama (2011) found that visual shadowing, in which learners orally repeat visually displayed input that is synchronized to the speed of auditory input, combined with auditory shadowing (visual-auditory shadowing) facilitates improved phonological learning of English compared to auditory shadowing alone. This study investigated whether visual-auditory shadowing leads to better listening comprehension than auditory shadowing alone using two groups: a visual-auditory shadowing group (N=33) in which learners utilized both visual shadowing and auditory shadowing, and an auditory shadowing group (N=34) in which learners used only auditory shadowing. All participants received weekly training for five times. Two types of listening comprehension tests, a general listening test and a situation model listening comprehension test, were given before and after the training. A pre- and post-analysis of general comprehension revealed that the visual-auditory shadowing group outperformed the auditory shadowing group. A pre- and post-analysis of the situation model listening comprehension test showed that visual-auditory shadowing training resulted in deeper understanding of auditory input.
