Abstract

This paper focuses on the relations between the movie and school education, by analyzing an educational film "SEKITAN" (Coal), directed by a research society of using movie in education. The film begins the message that "this film made and edited parallel to contents in a 5-grade science textbook". This is a blistering criticism that former films made by commercial moviemakers are not suitable for educational use, and a declaration that educational films must be made by people engaged in education. On the other hand, "SEKITAN" includes the scenes that are not represented in the textbook. Generally, it is hard for films to watch again or play back smoothly and quickly. This requires careful consideration in movie making to contexts of scenes, as producers of "SEKITAN" adds the scenes that are not referred in the textbook. But these scenes produce a new use of films in a school education.
