Description
The purpose of this study was to describe a theoretical foundation for the design of lessons and materials with multimedia. Fundamental research fields, topics and problematic points on the educational use of multimedia are pointed out by reviewing previous research in educational action. The lower-level research fields on the educational use of multimedia are 1) classification of aims and objectives, 2) curriculum model, 3) instructional unit model, 4) support & activity model, 5) utility model, 6) software model, and 7) learning environment model. The research topics and problematic points are discussed with a focus on the software model field. These are 1) open characteristics of Hypermedia educational programs, 2) developers of Hypermedia educational programs, and 3) structure of Hypermedia educational programs. The suggested research topics derived from this study are 1) construction of the typology of information links with different modalities, 2) analysis of children's multimedia programs or products, and 3) analysis of the program production process of children.
