Abstract

This study examined the potential shown by the Internet in a project called "A World Community of Old Trees." This project, which dates from 1996, was launched by June Jullian, an art teacher who was interested in art education that addresses ecology and who developed student workshops with this focus. Jullian's project focuses not only on information media, but also on ecological art education. As she puts it, "The project engaged a cross-cultural community of learners in identifying, writing about, discussing, and documenting with original visual art, the oldest trees in their environment." Jullian's project, which was managed not by an organization but by individuals, revealed the potential of the Internet to forge small communities and to promote mutual learning.
