Abstract

This research focuses on art education for infants in the Meiji period, when people were influenced by Friedrich Froebel (1782-1852) and when Froebel's "Gifts"-centered child care was provided. This is a paper is part of a series and deals with the period from the 9th year of Meiji (1876), when Tokyo Women's Teachers College Attached Kindergarten was established as the first public kindergarten in Japan, to the 31st year of Meiji (1898). This research focuses on Froebel's "Gifts" such as "Drawing" and "Modelling" (clay modelling) in order that childcare systems and childcare theory may be studied and analyzed. Some reference to the slight expression of infant's subjective self in their clay models.
