Abstract

In order to examine the effects of hydrogen on fatigue properties, the rotating bending fatigue tests were carried out using a cantilever-type testing machine for the artificially hydrogen-charged specimen of bearing steel. Fatigue lives of the hydrogencharged specimens were decreased more greatly than the hydrogen-unchaiged specimens. The crack initiation site was a subsurface-induced fracture without a fish-eye in all stress amplitude conditions. Based on the microscopic observation results, it seems that the threshold stress intensity factor range ΔK_<th> of the hydrogen-charged specimen was smaller than that of the hydrogen-uncharged specimen, and the crack propagation rate of the former specimen became faster than that of the latter specimen.
