Abstract

This study deals with the drastic reduction of coolant consumption in cylindrical plunge grinding of chrome molybdenum steel (JIS SCM435) with the vitrified CBN wheel CB120M180VN1. In order to avoid the thermal damage of workpiece, a large amount of grinding fluid is generally used because air flow around the rotating grinding wheel surface prevents the ingress of coolant into the wheel-work contact zone. A newly proposed flexible brush-nozzle is placed in the wheel surface for the purpose of reducing coolant supply in grinding process. This flexible brush-nozzle makes it possible to cut the air flow and adhere coolant to the wheel surface by the ‘Coandă effect’. The availability of this innovative nozzle is examined in the case of cylindrical plunge grinding, in which grinding force, surface roughness, and grinding temperature are compared to those in the case of conventional wet grinding.
