Description

The present paper describes failure modes of injection molded PEEK gear. PEEK has good material properties such as high strength, high wear and heat resistance. And PEEK is expected to be applied to gear. Therefore, in order to estimate load capacity of PEEK gears, operating tests were performed under 1000, 3000, 5000min^<-1> of rotation speed, 3 to 13 N・m of applied torque, room temperature and no lubricant. As a result, it was found that failure mode of PEEK gear was changed depending on number of meshing and applied torque. The failure mode was often fatigue crack at tooth flank after 10^5 cycles or applied torque 8 N・m and less. Otherwise, the failure mode was fatigue crack at tooth fillet or plastic leaning deformation before 10^5 cycles or applied torque 7 N・ m and more. In addition, the estimation which relationship between failure modes and service lives shows fatigue cracks at tooth flank make load capacity lower. Therefore, for investigation of the reason that failure mode changed, tooth flank of PEEK gear was observed every 20 minutes during operating test under 7 N・m and 1000min^<-1>.
