Abstract
By research of the brain science in recent years, it has revealed that blind person can perceive tactile information in the primary visual cortex. From that, we aimed to develop the tactile display which can display graphic information and animation. We used Coil-Shape Memory Alloy (C-SMA) as an actuator. C-SMA makes the pins up when electrical current applied and heating. The prototype of tactile display which has 3×3 pins (9 pins) with 2.5mm pitch. This display is also effective to display Braille points. We tested pattern discrimination tasks for 6 blind subjects and 10 sighted subjects used our device. By the tests, we evaluate its performance and compare tactile ability between the blind and sighted subjects. The result suggested that the tactile sense of blind subjects is significantly sensitive than sighted subjects.
