Abstract
A mathematical procedure is presented for quantitatively evaluating capabilities of a non-group purse seiner fleet toward 'the sustainable utilisation of natural resources'. The procedure deals with not only techno-economic aspect of fishing vessels but also fish population dynamics. The interaction between two aspects are modelled in both fish searching and fish catching process. Finally profitability of the fishing fleet is evaluated with an economic index and dynamic behaviour of biomass monitored with a non-linear dynamical model. Numerical examples based on this procedure show effect of the fishing fleet size and provide both possible scenarios toward overfishing and the sustainable utilisation.
