Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the labor conditions of coastal fisheries. This report uses findings from a labor survey of the coastal fisheries in Funka-bay, located in the north region of Japan. We compares the gill net fishing with scallop culture for the labor variables, such as hours of labor, hours of sleep, and also comfortable feeling of the fishermen to the labor conditions. On the basis of the comparison of the two fishings, the authors discussed the working conditions of fishermen in the coastal fisheries.
