Abstract

In order to examine the period of fine granular area (FGA) formation of bearing steel in high cycle fatigue, rotating bending fatigue tests were carried out at the stress amplitude 1100MPa below the fatigue limit. The tests were interrupted at the cumulative damage value ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 with an increment of 0.1 to charge hydrogen. And then the fatigue tests were continuously carried out. Although FGA was observed on the fracture surface in all conditions, FGA was not formed in all specimens. The stress intensity factor range of FGA tended to increase with an increase of the cumulative damage value. Therefore, FGA is considered to be gradually formed to limit size with advance of fatigue.
