Description

National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED) started operation of E-Defense, the world's largest three-dimensional full-scale shaking table, in June 2005 after its 10-year construction period. After the fundamental performance check on the shaking table in 2005, E-Defense will conduct various shaking tests for the investigation of reinforced concrete buildings, wooden structures and soil-pile-structure interactions, and for some research projects committed by other institutes. E-Defense is positioned as an international research facility to cooperate with other research groups in Japan as well as in the world. Regarding this, the George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) in the U.S. and NIED have worked the preparation tasks for a future collaboration research project since this year. In this U.S-Japan research project, NEES and NIED will jointly perform shaking tests on bridges and steel structures three years later.
