Description
Nonlinear vibrations in a two-story elastic structure carrying two rectangular liquid-filled tanks under horizontal harmonic excitation are investigated. Two cases are treated, (1) where the natural frequencies of sloshing in the tanks are respectively equal to the first and second natural frequencies of the structure, and (2) where they are equal to the first natural frequency of the structure. Modal equations are derived considering the nonlinearity of the hydrodynamic force. Then, frequency response curves are theoretically calculated by using van der Pol's method. It is found that amplitude modulated motion occurs when the liquid levels are high or when the excitation amplitude is comparatively large.
