- A topology optimisation for periodic structures of 2D hexagonal lattice

<p>In the last several decades, periodic structures such as photonic and phononic crystals have attracted much attention of researchers and engineers, because these materials have various special properties such as full bandgaps for waves. The full bandgap is defined as a “frequency range in which waves cannot propagate in any direction.” Periodic dielectric materials which have bandgaps for electromagnetic waves are called photonic crystals and their elastic counterparts are called phononic crystals or structures. It is expected that these materials can be used to next generation of wave devices, such as lasers, waveguides, slow light, super lens, cloaking etc. in optics and acoustic filters, noise/vibraton controling devices, transducers etc. in mechanics. In this situation, it is required to establish a method of controling full bandgaps of periodic structures. We have already developed a stable algorithm of the topology optimisation for 2D square lattice structures. In this paper, we present a method of topology optimisation for 2D photonic crystals. The main purpose of our research is to make full bandgaps of periodic structures of 2D hexagonal lattice larger with the topology optimisation.</p>
