Abstract

The effect of the small cutout of the edges of a square prism on drag reduction is examined experimentally in order to obtain the best cutout shape of the square prism. In the present experiment, drag coefficient, backpressure coefficient, Strouhal number and pressure distribution on the surface of the body are measured and flow visualization around the body is carried out by means of hydrogen bubble and oil flow methods. The experimental results show : (1) There is an appropriate cutout of the edges of the square prism such that the ratio of the drag coefficient of the square prism with small rectangular cutout to that without cutout is less than 0.4. (2) In the case of small square cutout of the edges of the square prism, the drag coefficient is less than that in the case of small round cutout and (3) the drag coefficient of the square prism becomes less than that of the circular cylinder, when we cut appropriately its edges.
