Abstract
Joetsu Shinkansen was the first high speed train in the world to be derailed due to an earthquake. Fortunately, the train stopped without collateral damages such as a knife-edge buckling and vehicle deviation from tracks and there were no fatalities. In this paper, some experiments on the derailment behavior using the scaled train model have been carried out in order to investigate the behaviors of the derailment of a high speed train as a trainset. Uneven distributions of the braking force caused different behaviors of a trainset.
