タイ国のバンコク市周辺に南北約300km, 東西約200kmの範囲に広がる平坦な海成地盤のチャオプラヤ・デルタは軟弱な粘性土を主体として形成されている。この粘性土は世界的に有明な取扱いの難しい土で, 道路盛土は高さ2.5mが限界であり, 排水路は掘削勾配を何割にしたら安定するのか分からないといわれている。このような軟弱地盤上に種々の構造物を建設するためには, どのような対策が必要か, 多数の技術者が研究中である。本文においては, 現在までに明らかにされたバンコク粘土の工学的特性とその根拠となっている化学的性質について, 世界中の研究者の研究成果を整理して紹介するものである。
