Reduction roasting and ammonia leaching have been conducted for low grade manganese nodules, and the influence of various fundamental factors was investigated on leaching rates of Ni, Co, Cu, Fe and Mn. Some of results obtained are as follows.
Independent of reduction atmosphere, leaching rates of Ni and Co had maxima respectively by the reduction roasting at about 873 Kin temperature ranged 673-1173K. The drop in leaching rates of valuable elements by the roasting at over 873K and/or for over 1.8 ks was estimated due to the compound (olivine) formation following crystallization of ores and/or the alloying of products.
H2 concentration in H2-H2O mixed gas had little influence on the leaching rate of Cu. The leaching rate of Ni became almost constant by the roasting in over 50% H2 atmosphere. The leaching rate of Co increased with increasing of H2 concentration in atmosphere. When the ore was roasted in 80% H2-20%H2O mixed gas atmosphere at 873K for 1.8ks, leaching rates of Cu, Ni and Co were about 95%, 90% and 85% respectively.
When roasted ores were leached at temperature over 343K, leaching rates of Cu, Mn and Fe decreased remarkably. The leaching rates of Mn and Fe increased remarkably with decreasing pulp density if pulp density became under 1%. The leaching rates of almost elements had strong dependence on ammonia concentrationin leaching solution. Increase of CO2 concentration in the solution was favorable for inhibiting Mn leaching.
