The authors made an experimental apparatus of outbursts, analogous to the shock-tube used to the chemical engineering. It is constructed of a driver section of 120cc a testing section of 1200cc in capacity and the measuring parts of gas and others.
A driver section was packed with fine particles of coal and poured little by little with pure methane highly pressed, the pressure difference from a driver section to a testing section in a moment of outbursts was controlled with the thickness of diaphragm. The pressure difference was in substance at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30kg/cm2.
In these conditions, the volume of suddenly emitted gas and pulverization of coal were calibrated. As a result-of this study, the authors recognized as follows:
(1) In, the outbursts of gas and coal, the particles of coal are more pulverized. It was caused by sudden desorption of gas from the interior of coal particler and abrasions in the violent stream after the outbursts.
(2) The larger the prersure difference in a moment of outbursts, the more coal particles are pulverized; and when the pressure is more than 20kg/cm2, a rize-distribution of crushed coal particles will be similar to the one of Rosin-Rammler's equation, and a suddenly emitted gas will become more remarkable.
(3) Pulverization of coal in a moment of outbursts are more remarkable in a proportion of the grindabilities of coal before the outbursts.
(4) A quantity of gas suddenly emitted at the time of outbursts may become larger as the pulverization of coal, and this notable pulverization will begin at about 5kg/cm2 of the pressure difference in a moment of outbursts.
