Abstract

In 1956 a shaft furnace with three hot stoves for Ni smelting, resembled to iron blast furnace, was constructed and put into operation at the Shimura Kako Co., Tokyo. The practicaloperation data of it were studied from the standing point of chemical reaction in the furnace by means of correlation analysis, which led us to introduce a factor, Rr, defined as
Rr=Fe weight in motte/FeO weight in slag
The relations of Rr with Ni% in slag, Ni % in matte, furnace condition and coke ratio (Rc)* were considered and the formulae obtained were as follows:
Ni % in slag×Rr=C C=const.
Rr=5.3 (Re-0.16)
slag weight/matte weight=1/2 Ni % in matte
with decreasing value of C the furnace condition became better. The discussion of these formulae was carried out and the yield of Ni was representedby Rr as
yield % =Rr/Rr+C/2
From the relations thus obtained the most desirable value of Rr to make the profit maximum with regard to yield and coke was also determined.
