Abstract

The effects of copper ion on the floatability of artificial ZnS which is fine powder possessing the structure of natural sphalerite have been studied using potassium ethyl xanthate as a collector. Experimentar results are summarized as follows: Copper abstraction proceeds to the extent of about 7 layers thick of ZnS crystal lattice, while the stoichiometric equivalence of zinc is emitted into the solution.
Copper-activated ZnS adsorbs ethyl xanthate to complete monolayer and no desorption takes place by water washing. Ethyl xanthate is also adsorbed on unactivated ZnS to complete monolayer, controry to the prevailing result on unactivated natural sphalerite. The ethyl xanthate adsorbed on unactivated ZnS, however, is considerably desorbed by water washing.
From the flotation tests it is recognized that the poor recovery of unactivated ZnS shows marked imfrovment even by a slight activation, and the maximum recovery is obtained when a monolayer coating of copper ion is attened.
It seems that the difference of floatability between unactivated and activated ZnS is related to the state of ethyl xanthate adsorption.
