As the fundamental study on flotation, the influences of interfacial tension andelectronic charge on contact angle were investigated in mercury-electrolyte solution system. The interfacial tension was measured by tharge was valued by the fundamental equation deduced by Lippmann as to the electrocapillarity.
The results obtained are as follows.
(1) The interfacial tensions between mercury and electrolyte solution decrease usually with increasing in electrolyte concentration.
(2) The contact angles on mercury in aqueons solutions are considerably affected by the nature of electrolytes and are less in agreement with the decrease of the interfacial tension than anticipated. It is in a solution of Na2S or KCN that the contact angle on mercury d creases with increasing in electrolyte concentration.
(3) In a solution of Na OH the electronic charge on mercury influences the contact angle, the maximum of which is observed at potential almost identical with zero charge on the corresponding electrocapillary curve. The effectof charge on contact angle is, however, scarecely noticed in a solution of NaCI or KCI.
